Kitsune refers to the mysterious, often mischievous trickster fire fox. These creatures can live for centuries, sprouting as many as nine tails before they ascend and become one with the heavenly sphere. Kitsune, as he appears in Hush Ronin and One Gaku has a total of four tails, indicating he is around 300-500 years old. In this illustration, Kitsune is beguiling the ronin samurai turned Buddhist monk, Ume, into taking up an enchanted bearded axe to chop down the tori gate that divides the world of yokai from that of human beings. This action will have lifelong repercussions for the pair of them.
