The Akateku is one of the strangest and most baffling of the Yokai. Ostensibly a disembodied child’s hand, it descends on a visceral strand from the boughs of the honey locust tree to startle and harass passersby. Though considered largely harmless, the Akateku is sometimes accompanied by a mysterious woman whose presence is known to induce fevers.
