Akkorokamui is more than just your run of the mill Yokai, it is actually a sort of deity or sea god; a merciless engine of destruction. Similar in appearance and demeanor to the famous Kraken of Dutch and European folklore and mythology, Akkorokamui most often presents on record as an octopus of calamitous proportions. In this depiction, it lays waste to the little Portuguese caravel, captained by Afonso Borges (the lone stalwart at the helm), whilst Ume does his humble best to loosen the colossal leviathan’s grip with his be-sacked Buddha statue.
